Maybe my favorite train platform type is the cut-out or notched or recessed platform (切欠きホーム in Japanese, does it have a name in English?) where three or four trains can use the same single island style platform. Mostly used at terminal station or for branch lines to elegantly avoid the extra space of a second platform, and given the number 0. The big drawback is that they get quite long, especially if it has to fit two full length trains. Here is an example at Toyama Station, as you approach it.
