People who are quick to take offense are often narcissists, driven by entitlement and an inability to tolerate even minor slights. Sometimes, they even feign offense to gain social or strategic advantage. Research on vulnerable narcissism and the dark triad—narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism—shows that victim signaling is strongly linked to these traits. Those high in them often exaggerate or embellish claims of victimhood to manipulate others into offering sympathy, resources, or status. This doesn’t mean victims have dark triad traits. Rather, people with these traits often disguise themselves as victims. The challenge is to support genuine victims while avoiding being misled into devoting time and resources to those exploiting victimhood for selfish or malicious purposes.
