Now that I'm refreshed with three hours of sleep, I think it's safe to say that it doesn't really matter for the purposes of public shouting whether the shooting yesterday was "justified" or "justifiable" in any ethical or (idealized) legal framework.
The reason for this is that we are, as I have often said, enjoying a low-grade civil war, and in war exigency overrules these kinds of concerns.
Most of what's been happening over the past 24h on X the Everything Site is partisans engaging, consciously or not, in frenzied information warfare to control a narrative. This can bear a superficial resemblance to "discourse" or "truth-seeking" but I think to veterans--especially those who remember the before-times--the difference will be obvious.
For those of you who are deliberately enjoying this war, by all means have fun storming the castle. I can only ask that you leave me out of the exercise, although this being a war I don't actually expect to be left alone.
For people who find themselves swept up in strong opinions about a contentious and politically-laden incident before the body is even cool, but don't actually want to live as an egregore's appendage: occasional reminder that you don't have to.
Your body is secure on the Internet, but your mind and your soul are very much exposed. Stay safe out there.
